How to explain that you are programmer?
Little thing but keeps me bugging time to time when meet new people- specially when talking to someone who equals internet to a facebook. It is not a real issue and this post should be taken humorously. I hope to hear you complain over the same thing.
Here is the "problem"
Every conversation leads to a point when usual smalltalk question pops up. "What do you do for living?" If I tell programming, it usually carries to an awkward moment when I try to explain- but actually I fail I think. There must be easy solution for that. Maybe I am solving this problem from the wrong end. Don't know. I am getting feeling that it would be easier to lie about it than tray to explain what programming is. I make fun that I should say other job like construction worker.
I am construction worker
I don't mean it bad way- it's just a example. People tend to not ask much questions about construction worker if any at all. At least in here- Estonia. Yeah- maybe next time I should just say that I am IT worker. But this has also its lethal drawback. People think that every IT worker can fix computers (and want to do it for free). Yeah sure.
What is your experience
I really hope I am not only weird. Is programming just so darn interesting (I highly doubt that) or people just try to grasp what the hell is it when digging me with questions? Maybe just fake interest. Have to ask next time, but what do you think about it? What is your hard to explain job and experience with explaining it?
